In Memoriam: A Tribute to Professor Eric Bateman

The Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Professor Eric Bateman, a distinguished member of our organization for over three decades. Eric was an inaugural member of the GINA Science Committee in 2002 and served as a member of the Board as well. Eric’s contributions to GINA and the field of asthma research have been invaluable, shaping our understanding of asthma diagnosis, treatment, and management on a global scale. Eric’s research has significantly impacted asthma care and will continue to influence future approaches, including in low-resource settings.

Eric’s unique approach to problem-solving was appreciated by GINA members; he was steadfast in staying focused on solutions that could be implemented in routine clinical settings. He was a master of finding common ground and navigating obstacles with grace and diplomacy.

Eric was a true teacher,  combining clinical experience with the ever changing modernization to care delivery mechanisms. He consistently reminded us to stay human and caring amidst rapid technological advances in care delivery. His legacy will continue to inspire and guide new generations of researchers and clinicians in the field of asthma care. Eric’s impact on global respiratory medicine is immeasurable. Eric will be deeply missed by his GINA family. The asthma community has lost a true visionary, but his contributions will continue to shape the future of asthma care for years to come. GINA extends its deepest condolences to Professor Bateman’s family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
